Passengers were delayed, strandedĬhris Martin, who was traveling on Monday, told CNN he was delayed for over two hours on a Southwest Airlines flight from San Jose, California, to Austin, Texas.Īfter tweeting about the airlines outage issues and delays, he said he was able to board a flight but many others were not so lucky. Southwest said it was working to get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible. "While the vendor worked to restore connectivity, we implemented a ground stop to protect the safety of our crews and customers," the statement said. Southwest said the technical issue Monday prevented the transmission of weather information that is required to safely operate their aircraft. At least four Southwest flights at O'Hare International Airport were delayed. It said the airline has canceled 478 flights and delayed 528 flights.Īccording to the Chicago Department of Aviation website, at least 18 Southwest flights have been canceled at Midway International Airport on Tuesday, and 15 others have been delayed on Tuesday. It's not automatic, but I always check independent sources - I 2nd TheMiddleSeat's suggestion of using FlightView."The FAA issued a temporary nationwide ground stop at the request of Southwest Airlines while the company resolved a reservation computer issue. These are fairly robust, in that you'll always receive them, but the information isn't really that valuable. This is even more limited, as it only sends a single notification at a preset time prior to departure or arrival. The 2nd system is Flight Status Notifications, for which you must sign up separately, for each individual flight. I've had flights cancelled and never received an single update, and it's common to be delayed multiple time, and then only receive notification after landing and turning my phone back on. If the delay changes you'll often not receive another updated notification. And this system I've found is very limited - you may receive a single notification but only if the delay is significant or the flight is cancelled. The "preferred method of contact" should populate from your RR account when you book, but it often doesn't. The systems Southwest uses for alerts is buggy at best, and not receiving them is, sadly, an ongoing and frequent complaint. ![]()
